What is a "Rapid Fire Development" training?

Rapid Fire Development is much more than simply learning the signs and conditions of a flashover.

During this Hands On Training ICFT teaches firefighters to be aware of many factors surrounding the dangers and warning signs of Rapid Fire Development.  ICFT's RFD class is more than watching for "fire snakes" and feeling heat.

Firefighters learn to distinguish the possible causes and differing factors of several scenarios surrounding Rapid Fire Development.

These objectives include, but are not limited to:

  • Classic warning signs of Rapid Fire Development
  • FLASHOVER - TEMPERATURE induced Rapid Fire Development
  • BACKDRAFT - OXYGEN induced Rapid Fire Development
  • SMOKE EXPLOSION - IGNITION induced Rapid Fire Development
  • Atmosphere control - fire attack & ventilation
  • Awareness of surroundings - smoke conditions, heat conditions, & air tracks
  • and Basic Fire science
What is a "Hot Box"?

The Hot box is designed as a training device to simulate Rapid Fire Development within a controlled environment.  The "Hot Box" can replicate a flashover multiple times to train new fire fighters on what to look for in real life situations.  Trailer Equipment Custom designed and built the Hot Box for ICFT, to show students what a flashover looks like.  Some of the features added to the Hot Box are; an extended loading area for a safer burn, a large storage space for wood and equipment, and being portable with a Semi Tractor that can be moved around the United States!  Check out Trailer Equipment Homepage Spec Page to see the dimensions, or view pictures and videos of live burns!.

The Hot Box project is an innovative partnership with a Trailer Equipment company.  This is the story of how they came to be…

One day, a car was speeding around Grand Rapids, MI and like most speeders, they flagged the attention of an officer.  This one car in particular had a few warrants out for its arrest and decided to flee from the flashing lights.  From Burton Street, he made a quick right down Steele SW.  Down this street he lost control and ran into a street light.  Needless to say, the man was caught and brought to justice!

Firefighters arrived at the scene of the accident. After the mess was taken care of, one of the firefighters came across the street and sparked up a conversation with our new and used equipment Sales Manager, Chris Becker.  They talked about many things, but one in particular was the idea to build a flashover simulator out of a shipping container.  Chris was confident in Trailer Equipment’s service, along with the open mind of the company.  In that moment, conceived the first step of creation.

Just a few months later… The hot box was born!
